What is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac Disease is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the small intestine. It is caused by a reaction of the body to gluten, a group of proteins found in wheat and other grains such as barley, rye and spelt. Antibodies are formed which can lead to inflammation and shortening of the villi and can cause malabsorption of nutrients. Coeliac Disease is not a wheat allergy and is different from Gluten sensitivity. Symptoms of Coeliac Disease vary greatly. It is important to see your Health Professional to get the correct Diagnosis. Do not limit your gluten intake until either CD has been confirmed or excluded as cause for your symptoms. Diagnosis for Coeliac Disease requires a biopsy of the small intestine. This can be difficult if you remove gluten too soon from your diet.

Are gluten free Oats safe to consume for people diagnosed with Coeliac Disease?

No. The protein Avenin in Oats is very similar to Gluten. While not all people react to it, it is safer to avoid products containing gf oats as a coeliac. If you are gluten intolerant or adhering to a gluten free diet due to other health issues, gluten free oats may be safe for you to consume. Our oats have a gluten level of <3ppm.

What about other allergens?

A lot of the products are not only gluten free but also lactose free, egg free and without palm oil or preservatives. While extra care is taken to mark the products as such, please always read the manufacturers label of ingredients to make sure the product is safe for you to eat.
